Khmer New Year is most important holiday. The cities empty as Cambodians rush to spend the holiday with family at provinces. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year’s Day. This time of the year is at the end of the harvesting season. The farmers enjoy the fruits of their harvest and relax before the rainy season begins. Gifts and tips are especially auspicious during April and should be accompanied with the phrase ‘Sok Sabay, and Suo Sdey Ch’nam Tmey’ (Happy New Year!).
This year is the Year of Snake, “Ch’nam Masanh”, I went to my homeland “Siem Reap Province” to meet my family and spending holiday with them. My brothers and Sisters also allowed to day off from work during New Year days. It was nothing special but it was the happiest day. Not much more food at home but I ate my mom meal. Nearly one year, I never back home, this New Year I don’t have much more money, I can only bought a T-shirt for my father and my brothers. The last day of New Year I went to Angkor Wat, and Angkor thom with my parents and we did the washing to Buddha and Monks there. it called “ Srong Preah”. The happiest thing was playing traditional games with many people there. I promised to myself that I will try to earn money and make the next New Year better than this year.
